Abstract: Birzeit University (BZU) is an academic community with almost 14,000 students including faculty and employees is facing limited access to freshwater resources, climate change impacts with irregular-short rainy days and exacerbated by the instability in political environment in Palestine due to Israeli military orders. Like other rural communities in Palestine, BZU has opted for a decentralized wastewater treatment facility with effluent reuse scheme on campus. This video illustrates the units operations for the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a contact stabilization system with gravity sand filters for post treatment. The WWTP, established in late seventies, has a steady state activated sludge process with reclaimed water suitable for landscape irrigation on campus.
Description: This is a short video illustrating the sewage works at Birzeit University main campus, a decentralized sewage treatment system with zero-liquid discharge, every single water drop is being twice used; one for domestic usage the reclaimed water is applied in agricultural applications including on-campus landscape irrigation.
