Abstract: The chapter discusses the ways in which the French orientalist and philologist Silvestre de Sacy conceptualized Druze religious traditions, and how his work was later used and modified by the Egyptian philosopher, the late Abdulrahman Badawi, within a modern conception of the Arab nation. Lastly, the article juxtaposes these intellectual traditions with ethnographic observations on how a contemporary Druze community perceives of its religious traditions.
