Abstract: In this chapter, I will start with a comparative overview over the meaning and purpose of citizenship, followed by a presentation of various ways to access and lose citizenship by making reference to as many jurisdictions as possible. I will then present cases from specific jurisdictions are provided (US, Germany, France and South Africa) aiming at showing the role of courts in dealing with the many challenges facing citizenship.
